NOTH SUMUT INDONESIA-In a disconcerting narrative of governance, North Sumatra, particularly its capital Medan, emerges as a focal point for corruption cases involving high-ranking officials. The province’s tumultuous history, riddled with successive arrests of three mayors and two governors by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), paints a grim picture of systemic corruption.
The saga begins in 2008 when Mayor Abdillah of Medan faced conviction for the misappropriation of a staggering 26.9 billion IDR from the city’s budget. This marked the onset of a troubling trend, as subsequent leaders, including Rahudman Harahap and Dzulmi Eldin, found themselves entangled in corruption charges. Medan, once a bustling city, became synonymous with municipal administrations tainted by financial improprieties.

The corruption contagion extended its grasp to the gubernatorial level, with Samsul Arifin and Gatot Pujo Nugroho falling prey to KPK arrests for their alleged involvement in corrupt practices. The gravity of the situation heightened when 14 members of the DPR in North Sumatra were implicated in accepting bribes to influence crucial decisions, underscoring the depth of corruption within the region’s political landscape.

District heads in North Sumatra also found themselves embroiled in corruption scandals, exemplified by Binahati Benediktus Baeha and Fahuwusa. Binahati faced charges related to misusing funds for PT Rio Airlines, while Fahuwusa, a former prosecutor turned district head, succumbed to allegations of bribery in a bid to secure re-election.
The rot of corruption spared no sector, with individuals like Wakil Bupati Nias Selatan Hukuasa Ndruru, Walikota Pematangsiantar Robert Edison Siahaan, and Bupati Mandailing Natal Hidayat Batubara facing legal repercussions for their involvement in corrupt practices.
The electoral process itself faced severe challenges, as seen in Tapanuli Tengah, where allegations of bribery against Bupati Raja Bonaran Situmeang marred the legitimacy of the election results. This resulted in a four-year prison sentence for Bonaran, as the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) relentlessly pursued justice.
Even seemingly independent leaders, such as Arya Zulkarnain, the two-term elected Bupati Batubara, found themselves ensnared in corruption cases, reflecting the pervasive nature of the issue.
The narrative unfolds further as Labuhanbatu, Labuhanbatu Utara, Labuhan Batu Selatan, Padang Lawas, Padang Lawas Utara, Toba Samosir, Simalungun, Pakpak Bharat, Tanjung Balai, and others witnessed their respective leaders facing legal consequences for corrupt practices.
The unsettling climax involves Terbit Rencana Perangin Angin, previously considered among the wealthiest regional heads in Indonesia. In 2020, with assets exceeding 85 billion IDR, Terbit Rencana Perangin Angin faced charges related to bribery concerning procurement of goods and services and human trafficking, adding a shocking layer to the region’s corruption narrative.
North Sumatra’s battle against corruption is far from over. The systemic issues that have plagued the province’s governance demand comprehensive reforms to restore trust, transparency, and accountability in the local administration.
